INTO INDIAN COUNTRY
Thanks to an enterprising scholar, the Plains Indian culture depicted
in the Oscar-winning film "Dances with Wolves" can be more than just a
cinematic fantasy. Anthropologist Robert Vetter has organized a
series of week-long tours through Oklahoma called "Journeys Into
American Indian Territory," which are designed to immerse travelers in
the tribal life-style of a century ago. Participants camp in tepees,
eat traditional foods, and meet descendants of the 66 Native American
tribes who, in the mid-1800s, were forced to settle in an area
designated as Indian Territory. Each tour specializes in a different
aspect of Indian culture, such as religion and spirituality, or music
and dance. Tours in 1991 are scheduled for July 10-17, August 14-21,
September 4-11, and October 9-16. For information, contact Robert
Vetter, P.O. Box 929, Westhampton Beach, N.Y. 11978; (516) 878-8655.
